Some ‘’Stories ‘’ from around the world—2012 Policy of Selection

AUSTRALIA: You need National Performance Standards and you have a window around 6 months to present them. There are 1k swimming, 20k TT, and 5k run from 16 year old to elite, with DIFFERENT QUALITY TIMES for junior, U-23 and elite. For example: 1k swim for junior male, 12:35; 12:19 for U-23; y 12:09 for elite. (There is not a particular time for bike. It needs to be a Time Trial). Main purpose: The purpose of the National Performance Standards (NPS) is not a definitive measure of Triathlon ability. Rather, they used as a quantifiable measure of potential and improvement in each of the three legs of triathlon. Philosophy behind NPS: It should be emphasized that performances in draft legal triathlon is still the key performance indicator that determines athletes’ performance. The table should be utilized as a reference tool, but in no-way substitute’s performances in specific triathlon events. Recommendations: Outline to athletes that it is all about them doing the very best they can do in each performance. It is not about comparing with others, because effort is the most important thing. It is not necessarily the athlete with the fastest single discipline times who becomes the best triathlete.

NEW ZEALAND: You are selected with YOUR PERFORMANCE IN RACES. 1o race: Previous World Championship (top 3) 2o race: U23 Oceania Championship Devonport 10 and 11 March (first New Zealand male and female finishing within 3% of the overall winner elite and U23 If there are slots remaining, a list of others races (Aukland 2011, Kinloch 2012, Geelong 2012, Moolooloba 2012, Sydney 2012) will be considered. TRI NZ reserves the right to request swim and/or run Time Trial and/or bike test to CONFIRM FITNESS PRIOR TO WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP at the discretion of the National COACH and Selection Commission. TIME TRIAL AND PEAK POWER TEST CRITERIA. Junior 400m 4:45 and 5k run 15:45, bike power 20’’ 8 watts/kg, 3’ bike power 4 watts/kg.

CANADA: You are selected with YOUR PERFORMANCE IN RACES. Basic run and swim standard. Juniors are chosen regarding their performance in Junior World Championship, North American Championship 2012, and National Teck Series. Elite are chosen 1) if they have completed 2 Continental Cup or World Cup races in the 12 months period preceding the Triathlon Canada entry deadline for the World Championhip Series and/or WC they wish to enter. 2) Met run and swim standard, men 10k 32:40 or 5k 15:40; 1500 19:30 or 800m 9:36.

ENGLAND: You are selected with YOUR PERFORMANCE IN RACES. NO TIME STANDARDS.

SPAIN: You are selected with YOUR PERFORMANCE IN RACES.

USA: You are selected with YOUR PERFORMANCE IN RACES. U23 1)ITU U23 World championship Beijing 2011 finished in the Top 10, qualified by order of finish, 2) 2012 Dallas ITU Panamerican cup. Athletes who qualify by those standards must also demonstrate their fitness by meeting one fo the following standards: a)top 5 in a ITU Continental cup before August 1, 2012 or b)swimming and running Benchmarks Athlete must meet the A standards in the swim or the run and the B standard in the run or swim. Swim A standard 1500m 17:26, B 18:48; Run 10k 32:00 A standard, 33:30 B standard. NOBODY CHECK A 1K RUN!!!!!
